The Magic of Typewriters: A Young Writer’s Perspective
Share
One of the most rewarding parts of our work is connecting with our clients and seeing how typewriters inspire their creativity. It’s like watching a spark turn into a flame- each keystroke adding fuel to a writer’s imagination. Sometimes, we come across stories that remind us just how powerful these machines can be.
Louise is almost 12 years old. She is passionate about classical, contemporary, and character dance, and she loves expressing herself creatively through movement and storytelling. Just as a dancer brings emotion to life through movement, Louise brings her ideas to life through words- and her typewriter has become an essential part of that process.
An Interview with Louise
Why do you prefer a typewriter over a computer for writing your stories?
"A typewriter helps me focus on what I’m writing without distractions. When I type on a computer, there are so many things to click on, but with a typewriter, it’s just me and my words. I also love how each key makes a sound- it feels like I’m creating something real and permanent. And since I also enjoy drawing and calligraphy, I appreciate things that feel handmade and personal."
What kind of stories do you enjoy writing the most?
"I love writing short stories because they let me explore lots of different ideas and characters. Each story feels like a little adventure, and I get to decide how it begins and ends."
Which famous writers inspire you, and why?
"Judy Blume is one of my favourites because her stories feel so real. She writes about everyday life in a way that makes you feel like you really know the characters. I’d love to write stories that make people feel that way too."
What’s the first thing you plan to write on your new typewriter?
"I want to start with an autobiographical piece about my favourite memories and experiences. Writing about real moments from my life feels like the perfect way to get to know my typewriter."
How does the sound or feel of a typewriter help your creative process?
"The sound of the keys makes me feel like I’m making something important. It’s different from typing on a computer because I can actually see and hear my progress. Every letter I type feels more meaningful, and that makes writing even more exciting."
Why Stories Like Louise’s Matter
Louise’s perspective is a great reminder of why typewriters are more than just machines-it’s a creative companion. In a world of fast-paced technology, where everything is edited, deleted, and rewritten in an instant, a typewriter slows things down, making each word feel intentional and meaningful.
We’re honoured to be part of her creative journey, where an old-fashioned typewriter is a perfect partner, and we hope her story encourages others to rediscover the joy of writing in its purest form.
