Eight machines we recommend most often, what each one is actually like, and the compromise to know before buying.
The default answer, and for once the default answer is right. Light enough to move, substantial enough to sit still, with a genuinely pleasant keyboard over long sessions.
Best for: first-time buyers, journals, letters and students.
The 32's older, smaller and slightly more elegant sibling. Its reputation among writers is largely deserved.
Best for: travel, small desks and people who prefer a compact machine.
Flat, wide, German and built with the sort of precision that makes you sit a little straighter. Long underrated, which kept prices sensible.
Best for: daily writing on a budget and anyone who likes a crisp key action.
The famous suitcase machine: Swiss, thin and remarkably portable for its era.
Best for: writing away from home, and looking extremely good while doing it.
A flat portable that is quietly excellent and consistently overlooked. One of the best value-per-euro machines we handle.
Best for: Carry-On Class without paying Hermes prices.
Where portable stops being a compromise. Substantial, stable and still supplied with a case if you must move it.
Best for: long sessions, home offices and writing with a deadline.
The machine mechanically minded people often end up buying. Built as if it is expected to outlive you, and it probably will.
Best for: daily writers and people who value engineering over styling.
Later, cleaner and more overtly designed. A machine that looks like the decade it came from.

The things nobody tells you
The practical answers usually make the decision easier.
Yes. Universal ribbons fit the overwhelming majority of machines we sell, we stock them, and they are not going anywhere. The same spools serve thousands of models. A ribbon costs a few euros and lasts for months of normal use.
Yes. Gloriously. If you share thin walls with someone, buy them a coffee first. Some machines are quieter than others and we will tell you which.
Every restored typewriter includes a one-year warranty. After that, we are still here to help. Since 2013, we have built a trusted network of technicians and repair shops worldwide, so wherever you are, we will help you find a solution.
Barely. Keep it covered, keep it away from damp and change the ribbon when it fades. Do not oil it yourself. That is the one thing that creates real work later. Our care guide covers the rest in about four minutes of reading.
Probably. We keep English QWERTY, Spanish QWERTY with Ñ, AZERTY, QWERTZ, QZERTY and a rotating cast of rarer national layouts. Tell us your language and we will explain what is possible. This matters more than colour, and many buyers discover that too late.
Buying for someone else
A typewriter is an unusually good present, which is exactly why it is worth getting right. Colour is the easy part. Language, layout, available space and whether they will use it are the details that decide whether it lives on the desk or in the cupboard.
Tell us what you know about the recipient, even if it is not much, and we will narrow the choice without involving them.
Leaving it late? Tell us the real date. We will tell you honestly whether workshop preparation and shipping can meet it. We would rather say no than ruin a birthday.

The unhurried route
Answer properly and we will narrow hundreds of possibilities to three or four machines that genuinely suit you, including machines that never reach the website. "I am not sure" is a useful answer. It tells us where to help.

Because the word gets used loosely
Every machine we sell as restored and ready to write is individually prepared in our Fuengirola workshop.
Outlet, as-is, decorative and unrestored machines are labelled separately and priced accordingly. We would rather tell you about a scratch than have you discover it.

El Granero provided me with an exceptional level of service, attention to detail, and authentic communication. I purchased the Olympia typewriter from a friend and noticed the "a" key was not working properly. When I attempted to make the adjustment myself, the arm broke off, which began my journey of research to find a professional restoration service. Coming across El Granero, I noticed they had a 50 euro option to repair the typewriter (with shipment to-and-from their location in Spain). The process was not as difficult as I had anticipated, and the owners provided updates, videos, and demos of the fixes they made to my typewriter. I am truly grateful that they were able to not only fix the "a" key, but fully tune and restore my typewriter to its former glory. In 2021 I had bought a beautiful Olympia Traveler de Luxe...it looked like new. Between moving from one country to another and place to place I was finally able to bring it with me. I lost the manual and was stuck. I was scared so I contacted them quickly via Instagram. Not even 2 minutes passed and I was resolving the mess I had. They sent me the manual and wow it was working again. They even sent me photos with drawings so I could understand since I am new to this world of clippers. Super happy, and now let's write!

El Granero does a fine job. I once had two rare typewriters of the same make and model. Both had problems. However, they were able to fashion one working and complete Groma Kolibri typewriter to me. I was on holiday in southern Spain shortly after the work was complete. he went out of his way to deliver the machine to our hotel. superb service everytime I have worked with El Granero typewriter.company.
