First decision

Standard fit or custom made?

Many popular models already have their own cover. A custom order is the right route when your machine is unusual, has a long carriage or simply is not on our model list.

I know the model

Start with our ready-size covers for Olivetti, Olympia, Hermes, Underwood, Remington, Smith-Corona and other familiar machines.

I need a custom fit

Choose the nearest size below. After checkout, send the measurements from our diagram and we will confirm everything before cutting.

See custom sizes

Not sure what typewriter you own? Send one photograph from the front and one from above before or after purchase. We will help identify the model and tell you whether a standard cover already exists.

Custom order sizes

Choose the closest starting size

These ranges help you choose the correct listing. They are not the final pattern: every custom cover is made from the exact measurements you send us.

Small

Compact and ultra-portable machines, such as many Olivetti Lettera, Hermes Baby, Olympia Splendid or Adler Tippa models.

Guide only
W 11–13 in · 28–33 cm
D 9–11 in · 23–28 cm
H 3–4 in · 8–10 cm

Order custom S

Medium

Most semi-portables, including many Hermes 3000, Olympia SM, Olivetti Studio and comparable machines.

Guide only
W 14–16 in · 36–41 cm
D 12–14 in · 30–36 cm
H 5–6 in · 13–15 cm

Order custom M

Large

Large semi-portable or standard office machines, including many Underwood, Royal, Remington and Adler models.

Guide only
W 17–19 in · 43–48 cm
D 15–17 in · 38–43 cm
H 7–8 in · 18–20 cm

Order custom L

Extra large

Very large desktop, electric or long-carriage typewriters that sit outside the usual standard-machine dimensions.

Guide only
W 20–22 in · 51–56 cm
D 18–20 in · 46–51 cm
H 8–9 in · 20–23 cm

Order custom XL

Measure before choosing if your machine is near the limit. If one dimension falls into a larger category, choose the larger listing or contact us. Please do not add seam allowance or “a little extra”; we add the correct working allowance when we make the pattern.

How it works

From your desk to our sewing table

The important part is confirmation. We do not start from an unverified guess.

Choose a route

Buy a model-specific cover if your exact machine is listed, or choose the closest custom S, M, L or XL listing.

Select the trim

Choose classic black or the custom-colour option. The available colour gallery is shown below and on each custom listing.

Measure the machine

Follow the labelled diagram after checkout. Measure the typewriter itself, not its case, and include projecting controls.

Send the details

Send the order number, brand, model, measurements, trim colour and two clear photographs by email or WhatsApp.

We confirm

We review the numbers and pictures with you. Production starts only after the fit and choices have been confirmed.

We make and ship

Production is usually 5–10 working days after confirmation. We then send the cover using the shipping method selected for your order.

Materials and choices

Clear protection, finished by hand

Transparent vinyl keeps the machine visible and protects it from ordinary household dust and light accidental splashes. Fabric trim gives the cover its structure and character.

Measuring guide

Measure the machine, not the memory of it

Use a firm tape measure or ruler and follow every letter on the diagram. Send the measurements exactly as taken; we will add the allowance needed for the seams and easy fitting.

  • Measure the typewriter without its carrying case.
  • Include the carriage return lever and every projecting knob in the total width.
  • Use the widest, deepest and highest points, not only the body shell.
  • Keep all measurements in one unit: centimetres are preferred, inches are also welcome.
  • Send one front photograph and one photograph from above so we can verify the shape.
  • Do not round down and do not add your own extra centimetres.

Use and maintenance

How to keep the cover clear and the machine healthy

A dust cover is simple, but a few good habits help both the vinyl and the typewriter last longer.

Put it on gently

Lower the cover over a dry machine and guide it around the carriage return lever and knobs. Do not pull the cover by the trim.

Let the machine breathe

Transparent vinyl is not breathable. If the machine is stored for long periods, remove the cover regularly and check that the room is dry.

Clean with mild soap

Wipe with a soft damp cloth, clean water and a drop of mild dish soap. Dry with a clean soft cloth before replacing it.

Avoid solvents

Do not use acetone, alcohol, aggressive chemicals, abrasive sponges or solvent cleaners. They can cloud, harden or damage the vinyl.

Avoid heat and sun

Keep the covered machine away from radiators, intense sunlight and large temperature swings. Heat can soften vinyl; cold can reduce flexibility.

Relax stubborn wrinkles

First lay the cover flat. For a severe crease only, use a hairdryer on low heat from at least 15 cm / 6 in away, moving continuously, then let it cool flat.

Important: a dust cover protects against ordinary indoor dust and light accidental splashes. It is not a shipping cover, rain cover, heat shield or airtight storage bag.

Frequently asked questions

Before you place a custom order

Do I need to know the exact model?

No. Send clear photographs from the front and above. We can often identify the model, or at least determine whether it needs a standard or custom cover.

Should I buy a custom cover if my model already appears in the shop?

Usually not. A model-specific cover is simpler and normally costs less. Choose custom when the carriage, knobs, added base or body dimensions differ from the standard machine.

Should I add extra space to my measurements?

No. Send the exact outside measurements. We add the correct ease and seam allowance when we prepare the pattern.

Which parts must be included in the width?

Everything that projects from the machine: carriage knobs, carriage return lever and any other fixed control. The measuring diagram specifically reminds you to include the return lever.

Can I choose a trim colour not shown in the gallery?

Ask us before ordering. We can often offer another colour, but availability changes and some special fabrics may affect timing or price.

Can I wash the cover?

Wipe it by hand with a soft damp cloth and mild dish soap. Do not put it in a washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, and do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.

Will the cover trap moisture?

Vinyl does not breathe, so the machine must be dry before it is covered and the room should not be damp. For long-term storage, remove the cover periodically to air and inspect the typewriter.

What if the cover arrives with folds or wrinkles?

Allow it to relax at room temperature and lay it flat first. If a severe crease remains, use low heat from a hairdryer at least 15 cm / 6 in away, moving constantly. Excess heat can warp the vinyl.

Can I return a made-to-measure cover?

Because a custom cover is made to your measurements and choices, it cannot normally be returned for a change of mind. This is why we confirm the details before production. If we have made an error, contact us immediately so we can put it right. See our returns policy.

Is the typewriter included?

No. Typewriters shown in the photographs demonstrate the fit and transparency. Each dust-cover listing is for the cover only.

"I had a wonderful experience with El Granero, which must surely rank among the best typewriter companies in Europe, if not the best! Ania and Jacek were encouraging from the beginning and kindly invited me to visit their lovely Atelier in Fuengirola. Although very busy with orders, they prioritised my selection and got it ready in a matter of hours so I could take it with me. All in all it was a terrific experience, and when I want to add to my collection, it will certainly be at El Granero. Thank you Ania and Jacek!"

Testimonio Local

"Por suerte descubrí El Granero Typewriter, donde fui atendido con profesionalidad y amabilidad por Jacek y Ania. Restauraron mi Olivetti Estudio 45, máquina muy especial para mí, ya que fue un regalo de mis padres. Además les compré una Olivetti Lettera 32 en perfecto estado. Más allá de la restauración y la compra, aprendes escuchando a Jacek y Ania. Les estoy muy agradecido."
